BEAUTIFUL SOULS

Welcome to Wednesday and it is afternoon and I have been distracted by beautiful words and poetry today and not got here as early as I would have liked to - nevertheless - here I am on another mild and beautiful day in Adelaide.

I have been thinking today of the 70th. Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz and watching the service in Poland where these wonderful souls were celebrating and remembering the darkest spaces in their minds.

They endured unimaginable horrors and losses and yet they can stand strong and clearly and strongly say that "their past must not become their children's future"    They are old men and old women now, accompanied by their children and revisiting that house of horrors.  There were tears - many of them and the companionship of a shared past and experience and many wearing blue and white scarves, which represent the uniform of Auschwitz.

A friend and I recall reading a book in our teens - written by a woman survivor of Auschwitz - the book  "Five Chimneys" by Olga Lengyel and how the book had a great impact on our lives.   We were young and innocent and I believe this book introduced us to man's inhumanity to man and instilled in both of us a compassion and care that lives to this day.

If you get the chance to read the book, please do - it is a wonderful read, but be prepared to be shocked and dismayed at what happened.    All of the people visiting Poland today are aware of so much that happened, but their eyes still sparkle and they are passionate that this must never happen again.

They are beautiful souls who have faced their pain, overcome their suffering and emerged from the literal darkness.

At dark these beautiful souls joined hands and walked into the camp together - they faced their darkness together.

So many horrific times and events have happened and we have learned very little but this anniversary deserves acknowledgement and that we must reach out to these people with tender care and a listening ear.

A somber blog post today but there is joy to be found in these beautiful souls who have overcome their suffering and emerged from the darkest spaces.
